Service Dog Program

Wow! I just reread my first blog and realized that it was only 3 weeks ago. Currently, we have 4 dogs in our Service Dog Program and word about us is spreading fast. We have people asking about dogs, training, and volunteering.

While everything can become overwhelming at times, all I have to do is grab a dog and do some training to become grounded again and focus on what’s important - our mission: to

Each veteran is different and each dog is different (right now we have 1 greyhound, 1 pitbull, and 2 german shepherds). Finding that perfect match makes all the anticipation, excitement, and worry worthwhile. Watching the dogs become confident in their abilities makes me so happy - especially knowing that my skills have helped them to become their best self. Meeting the veterans/first responders for the first time excites me because I know how much better their life is about to become. When the connection between human and canine happens, it’s magic. They begin a journey that is healing and uplifting for both of them.

Just to update everyone…

  • Bram is now Woody (named after Woody Williams) and is learning to control himself. His energy is still really high, but by burning some of it off before training, he is making huge strides. He is very submissive to all dogs (including a 5 pound Pomeranian we are pet sitting), and I have used him several times to temperament test other dogs

  • Ricky and Lucy are our newest service dog candidates. Ricky will become Ardie (named after Ardie Copas). We are still determining who Lucy will be named in honor of

  • We were contacted by the West Palm Beach VA in relation to the PAWS Act, since we provide veteran resources beyond just service dogs. It is gratifying to know that our hard work is noticed.

Everyone at Captain’s Canines for Heroes enjoys working together to help others. Each volunteer brings something different and unique to our group - together we make veterans/first responders…and ourselves…better!
