Meet the Trainers
The trainers at Captain’s Canines for Heroes are committed to helping each dog be the best they can be to help our veterans and first responders. They have trained many service dogs and enjoy the challenge each dog presents - much like people, each has their own personality, talents, and learning style…so do the trainers! Get to know them better.
Andrew Laney is a retired Marine that first started as a Service Dog candidate with mobility and PTSD issues. He was so impressed with how Captain changed his life for the better, that he became a trainer to help other veterans experience the difference the service dogs make. He apprenticed with Carolee Ellison and took additional courses from other professionals in the dog training field. Having been on both sides of service dog training gives him a unique opportunity to relate to our candidates.
Andrew’s past work as a paramedic, as well as his certification in Mental Health First Aid, has been a valuable addition to his ability to work with veterans with varied backgrounds. He has trained many dogs from start to finish, their handlers and families, as well as other Service Dog trainers. His passion to help others improve their lives through the addition of a service dog drives his exceptional work.
Andrew is one of Captain’s Canines for Heroes’ best trainers.

John Engle started as a dog foster. He quickly learned to read the personality of the dog he was fostering and adjust how he interacted with it. When the opportunity to foster already trained-service dogs presented itself, he volunteered right away. Keeping up the training, and “putting mileage” on a dog (repeatedly taking them to different places to increase their experience base) are very important. John did an amazing job maintaining the dog’s training. John excelled in this and began to apprentice with the trainers. After extensive training, he was given the responsibility to train dogs from start to finish.
John is one of Captain’s Canines for Heroes’ best trainers.
